Types of Nouns: Proper Nouns


Proper nouns (also called proper names) are the words which name specific people, organisations, things, or places. They always start with a capital letter. Remember, if it is a NAME, it is a PROPER NOUN.


Each part of a person's name:


Elizabeth Helen Ruth Jones, Madhu, Mahatma Gandhi



Names of organisations or trademarks:


Microsoft, Rolls Royce, the Round Table, WWW



Given or pet names of animals:


Lassie, Trigger, Sam



Names of cities and countries:


Paris, London, New York, England, English, Indians



Geographical and Celestial Names:


The Red Sea, Alpha Centauri, Mars, The Himalayas



Monuments, buildings, meeting rooms:


The Taj Mahal, The Eiffel Tower, Room 222



Historical events, laws, periods:


The Civil War, The Industrial Revolution, World War I



Months, days of the week, holidays:


Monday, Christmas, December, Diwali



Religions, deities, scriptures:


Hinduism, God, Christ, Islam, the Bible, the Gita



Awards, vehicles, brands:


The Nobel Prize, Ford Focus, The Bismarck, Kleenex



Festivals:


The Independence Day, Diwali, Children’s Day, Holi
