The Boy Who Cried Wolf - A Moral Story For Kids

Sonu, a young shepherd, lived at the foot of a hill and used to take sheep from the village to the hill for grazing and used to get paid for that. But, it was a very boring job for him as he had nothing to do while the sheep enjoyed the grass. One day, he thought of having some fun and started shouting,

“Wolf! Wolf!”

As soon as the villagers heard him, they picked up sticks and ran to the hill to save him and the sheep. But, they were extremely surprised when they saw no wolf around. Their surprise turned into anger when Sonu started laughing loudly and said,

“I fooled you all”

The villagers were irritated but, since he was just a young boy, they just warned him not to play such a prank again and left. However, Sonu did not learn his lesson and a few days later, he again started shouting at the top of his voice,

“Wolf! Wolf!”

As soon as the villagers heard his shouts, they again picked up sticks and ran to the hill to save him and the sheep. But, when they found out that Sonu had fooled them again, they got irritated again and scolded him for wasting their time. But Sonu had such fun that he played the same prank again after a couple of weeks. The villagers again scolded him but realised that he will not change his ways. So, they decided that the next time he will try the prank, they will not respond and will not react to it at all.

That turned out to be very unfortunate for Sonu and for the villagers. In a coincidence, a wolf actually came to the hill the very next week. Sonu saw the wolf before the wolf could attack the sheep and started shouting at the top of his voice,

“Wolf! Wolf!”

The villagers heard his shouting but they thought that he was playing a prank again and no one paid attention to him as they had decided. Sonu got scared when he saw that no one was coming to help him and save the sheep. He again shouted,

“Help! I am not lying this time. Please come and help me. Please save the sheep.”

But, no one did anything. They kept doing their work. Sonu was terrified. He kept shouting for a few more minutes while the wolf kept attacking and killing the sheep. Then, Sonu climbed up a tall tree and started crying. On the other hand, the villagers felt happy that they weren’t fooled again and that Sonu had stopped shouting as his plan had failed.

While hiding in the tree and crying, Sonu realized his mistake. By lying again and again, he had lost the trust of his own people and everyone had suffered due to that.

The moral of the story is - lies are always harmful even when told just for fun and once you lose trust of others, no one will believe you.
